AN ANIMATED CHRISTMAS FOR TERRY!

In February this year our very own Terry Cooper was asked to produce drawings for S4C's Christmas film, Pluen Eira.

Every year, S4C make a seasonal film, and this year the story was about a young child who is placed with a new foster family.

Frank's only joy is his comic collection, and when he's taken to spend Christmas on a remote farm, he's annoyed to discover that his comics haven't been packed. Bethan, a young girl who lives at the farm, gives him some pencils and paper, and he begins to draw the adventures of a superhero called 'Pluen Eira' (Snow feather) – based on his life and inspired by a white turkey on the farm.

Through the film, Frank's fertile imagination and drawings are shown coming to life via animated sequences. For this, Terry was briefed to draw Frank's thoughts and ideas – but in a simpler style befitting that of an eleven-year-old.

Terry said: "While the live action filming was happening, I produced a large number of drawings, broken into separate parts for the ease of animation, and also a comic book that Frank has printed out in the film. It was a very intensive few weeks, drawing through the night until daybreak, then picking up the next day's notes and brief in the morning to begin again. The film had some preview screenings in December, and was well received. It was aired on S4C on Christmas day at 6:30pm, in Welsh with English subtitles. I found it an interesting and fun job, and it really pushed me in terms of adopting a different style and providing the animation team with digitally drawn images that had the appearance of coloured pencils. I haven't seen it yet, but look forward to seeing my artwork come to life via animation."

We are very pleased for Terry at Candy Jar. He has been with us from the beginning and deserves this continuing success. Who knows what 2019 will bring?

Candy Jar Films teams up with leading supplier Pancake-World

The team here at Candy Jar are all solid advocates for a good pancake. As far as we're concerned, there's just no sense in saving them just for Pancake Day - we're more "Life's Too Short" kinds of people.

Our sister branch Candy Jar Films has been teaming up with Llantwit Major-based company Pancake World, the world's leading crepe mix, waffle mix, and crepe making accessories specialist to spread the Pancake word even further!
"At Pancake-World we are committed to providing the highest quality products and service at the best possible price [...]  We have over 15 years experience in the catering business, with a fair few years spent dealing specifically with everything crepe and pancake related" - Founder & CEO Loic Moinon
Together with Pancake-World Founder & CEO Loic Moinon, Candy Jar Films put their heads together to devise a tasty social media campaign in the run up to Christmas - et voila, The 12 Days of [Pancake] Christmas.

Just take a pinch of Christmas sing-a-long, a few good pancake puns, and a French man covered in milk.

Pancake-World has grown steadily over the last few years thanks to the proliferation of cafes and ice cream parlours that have responded to the demand for good coffee and indulgent treats. Recently, Pancake-World even secured a six-figure contract with the hugely successful dessert chain Kaspas. Crepes and waffles are more popular than ever in Wales, and Loic has been working flat out to serve the needs of his customers.

In the New Year, Pancake-World is setting up the first Creperie Training Kitchen in the UK, with the hope of assisting new or existing owners to perfect their crepe making or barista skills. Loic said: "We've been inundated with requests from people to improve their skills. We had no idea that this was not being offered, and decided to step up to the mic and invite them to our new training studio in Llantwit Major. If it is the success we expect it to be, we hope to roll it out across the country"

"It's just a bit of fun, and if my customers, or anyone else, enjoy it, I'll be a happy Frenchman!"

We say, compliments to the chef!

Amulet - out now!

The greatly anticipated, and already much celebrated children's book Amulet by Alison Thomas is out and available to purchase from Amazon and the Candy Jar Store.

Amulet is a fantasy adventure story about Dion, an intelligent boy who has trouble fitting in with the world and grappling with the frustrations of everyday life, and he definitely doesn't like change.

'When Dion is taken away to a world beyond the imagination, he finds that his disciplined mind becomes his strength. But little does he realise his life is now in danger.

Will his sister Megan get to him in time? Not if the evil Queen has anything to do with it.

For a boy who doesn't like change, Dion's strength and determination are the things that he will have to rely on.'

We're super excited to be releasing Alison's debut children's book, reviewed  by Anna Kennedy OBE:

“Amulet is a delightful story about Megan and Dion. On one level the reader is taken through a beautiful fantasy world which is a product of the children's imagination. On another level it intelligently highlights the difficulties presented by the real world to a child on the autism spectrum. The reader is shown how the child on the autism spectrum can be guided through life such that he becomes a full participant. I have no hesitation in recommending this book."

Alison said:
“This story is about a brother and sister: Megan and Dion Coombes. Dion has some social and communication difficulties. The family employ many strategies used by children with Dion’s difficulties. Should the strategies help anyone, then Dion, Megan and I will have achieved something worthwhile.”

Amulet is out now and available on Kindle and paperback.

RRP: £6.99
ISBN: 978-0993322167

A TERRIFIC REVIEW

Books Monthly is celebrating 15 years on the web with a Christmas guide extravaganza! One of their recommended reads/gifts is our very own See You in September. A big thanks to them for this review:

"This is one of those wonderful "bucket list" type of books where you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Joanne's story is heartbreaking yet, through it all there is a serenity, a search for happiness and joy that transcends every other consideration. If you didn't know she had a terminal illness, her account of the family trek around Europe would be inspirational enough, hilarious at times, desperate at times, yet the knowledge doesn't cloud the vision - of a determined woman who wanted to spend her last precious times with her family. Absolutely terrific."

The perfect stocking filler, this book is available now.

FIRST CLASS COMPANIONS

A big thanks to Books Monthly for this glowing review of Companions: Fifty Years of Doctor Who Assistants in their December issue. Congratulations to them on 15 years on the web!

http://www.candy-jar.co.uk/books/companions.html"If you're expecting an A-Z of Doctor Who companions, well, you'll get it, but you're in for a big surprise, because there have been many, many years when the Doctor Who canon continued without television, in print, of course, and only the most diehard, dedicated follower of the longest-running SF programme will remember the companions who journeyed with the various doctors in those dark days when their adventures were not televised. The author has achieved something quite remarkable in cataloguing and annotating all of those companions and turning the research into something very readable, very approachable. A brilliant book, beautifully produced and printed, and a most welcome addition to the vast library of Doctor Who literature. First class."
