CANDY JAR AUTHOR GETS DRAMATIC

Poet, pamphleteer and socialite, traveler, horticulturist and man of god and letters, the Reverend Doctor Thomas Sedgwick Whalley was one of the best-connected figures of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, with friends and correspondents ranging from William Wilberforce to Marie Antoinette. But few of his circle were more influential than Hannah More, arguably the most popular female writer of her day, not to mention a famed educator, philanthropist and a major figure in efforts to abolish the slave trade.

Now a film on More’s remarkable life is in the works, and Professor Christopher Stephens, author of The Reverend Doctor Thomas Sedgwick Whalley, the first biography of this singular gentleman, will be playing her long-time friend and neighbour. Professor Stephens spent ten years researching the eccentric, extravagant and generous life of Thomas Whalley, uncovering the voluminous range of his correspondence, the layout of his self-built mansion in the Mendip hills, and the course of his many travels throughout Europe. Having been a staunch and vocal champion of More’s often controversial work, the Reverend Doctor is bound to play an important role in the film, and in Professor Stephens the production will have an actor who knows his part inside out.

Hannah More is being produced by Redcliffe Films, and The Reverend Doctor Thomas Sedgwick Whalley is available here.

CANDY JAR COMPLETES CHANNEL 5 ADVERTS!

Candy Jar Films was asked by 'What's in the Bible?' to produce a series of short 'stings' to appear during ad breaks for the Channel 5 TV series 'The Bible' broadcast on Channel 5 in November.

Created by Phil Vischer, famous for producing VeggieTales, 'What's in the Bible?' sets out to teach kids (and parents!) the story of the Bible. Many of us know the stories of Moses, Noah, David, and Jesus, but in this ground-breaking new family video series, the audience is shown how they all fit together to tell one big, redemptive story. In 'What's in the Bible?' Buck Denver and his friends take the audience on a journey through the whole Bible, featuring witty dialogue, fast-paced animation and catchy tunes.

The Candy Jar team set out to interview children from local schools about their knowledge of the Bible, using funny and interesting responses to create the stings. Shot in front of a 'green screen', we then replaced the background with a variety of different colours in post production.

Thanks to Albany Road School and Roath Primary School for allowing us to come in and film during the day.

Candy Jar Films is available for all kinds of filming work - big or small. Please get in touch to see how we can help you.

AUTHOR TERRY COOPER TAKES HIS 10 PER CENT!

Kangazang! author Terry Cooper does more than just write. As well as being an artist, graphic designer, rapper and Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike he also puts his talents to acting. Recently, Terry starred in the short film 10 PER CENT by up and coming filmmaker Chris Bevan.

10 PER CENT is a tale of deception and double-crossing in a criminal underworld. Veteran professional thief 'Bad' Eddie Goodman (played by Terry) and his young accomplice Billy take on a dangerous job – to rob powerful ganglord Mr Zhang of £3 million and a huge stash of cocaine. But there is little loyalty among thieves and thugs and the prize is too tempting for anyone to play by the rules. Action, dark humour and tension abound in this short story of gangsters, gunplay and greed.

You can watch it here:

AUTHOR TERRY IN HIS LATEST ACTING ROLE

Kangazang! author Terry Cooper has just completed filming low-budget gangster movie '10 Per Cent'.

Terry plays 'Bad' Eddie Goodman, a small-time entrepreneurial robber, who ends up in a spot of bother after he is contracted to rip off a den of unsavoury villains. Terry isn't unfamiliar with acting having recently acted in a sci-fi short called 'The Halycon' filmed in Leeds (you can watch a trailer here). He also starred in the award-winning short film 'Frankly' last year and previously as an extra on 'Torchwood' and the feature film 'Outlaw' (2007).

In this new role, Terry really enjoyed playing his part in this gritty drama (rated 15 for violence and adult language) which features humour, stunts, violence and suspense. 10 Per Cent, written and directed by Cardiff-based film student Chris Bevan, is currently in post-production and will be released in the summer at The University Of South Wales.

EILEEN TO APPEAR ON THE ONE SHOW!

Eileen Younghusband (author of 'One Woman's War' and soon-to-be-released 'Men I Have Known') has just completed filming for the BBC’s The One Show. She was approached by the TV show’s producers to talk about her World War II experiences, in particular her work in the Filter Room. Here's how her day of filming went last week:

"It was a day starting at 9 o'clock filming with the presenter Marty Joplin in my house and then a 12 o'clock we had lunch in a village by the Severn Bridge. Transferring to a Land Rover, we headed into the depths of the countryside across a very muddy field which was licensed for rocket launching. We then got stuck in the mud in the middle of a vast field and had to be pulled out by the farmer and his tractor! As we waited for the rocket to be set up and launched, it was glorious sunshine but just when it was ready, torrential April showers and a thunderstorm arrived with vivid lightening. so we filmed under an umbrella. The first two rockets failed to ignite so we had another wait back in the Land Rover. The third was successful but we again filmed in pouring rain.

We did two filmings with a rocket. The second successful one launched well but it should have had a small parachute emerge as it landed so as not to break the rocket – this one failed to open! Fortunately this part was not filmed but the rocketeers were left with a very expensive ruined rocket! After that, we filmed in the Land Rover discussing maths whereupon the sun came out and an enormous rainbow appeared.

We moved to a narrow lane where they set up a model V2 with its correct markings, nose down in the grass, and we then explained all the calculations, waving my slide rule in the air – I was told to explain it clearly and simply! Unfortunately Marty’s mike was not working and then the camera got rain on its lens but we eventually did two good takes. Finally the order came to WRAP!

By then it was 6 o'clock. I was driven home via Newport railway station to drop off Marty, arriving at 7 o'clock in the evening, absolutely shattered.... Quite a day!"

The date of broadcast has yet to be confirmed, but we will post an update as soon as we know.

IMPROVING PATIENT CARE — HYWEL DDA LOCAL HEALTH BOARD

Candy Jar has recently completed a video for Hywel Dda NHS Local Health Board. Entitled 'Improving Patient Care', the video focuses on a number of improvements made by staff at two care homes in West Wales (Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire).

We wanted to help tell the story of how these changes have been implemented and ultimately benefitted both patients and staff.
